😇 AI can spot Tuberculosis
Welcome, Humans.

Alibaba’s new AI models

Alibaba has introduced a new set of AI models under its QWEN2 family. The new models are QWEN2-VL-72B, QWEN2-VL-7B and QWEN2-VL-2B. The VL in the name denotes "Vision Language".
QWEN2-VL achieves state-of-the-art performance in visual understanding.
QWEN2-VL understands the images and videos over 20 minutes in length.
QWEN2-VL-2B integrates with devices like mobile phones, robots etc.
QWEN2-VL supports understanding of texts in different languages like Japanese, Korean, Arabic etc.
When you upload an image and question the model about the contents of the image, the model understands and provides you with the right answers.
These models not only understand images but videos too. This new series of QWEN2-VL models understands the contents of the video and it answers the questions asked about the video. How cool is that?
The official release from Alibaba has multiple examples which you can find here.
These new Open-source models outperform closed models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT-4o mini in various benchmarks. Take a look at this screenshot here.
With these new models, Alibaba does tell the AI world that they have become one of the top leaders in the LLM space and they are not going anywhere.
AI can spot Tuberculosis (TB).
Imagine a world where health diagnosis can be made from a cough, a sneeze or even from breath. But right now, for any health diagnosis, a blood test is taken, after a few days of waiting, the results are provided and then a doctor visit is required to understand the test results and then based on the diagnosis the next step follows, isn't it?
The amount of wait time for each of these steps above varies depending on the availability and location. With health, any time delay is crucial, especially for chronic diseases like Tuberculosis (TB).
But with Google's HeAR (Health Acoustics Representations), the diagnosis can be done just from a smartphone's microphones. The HeAR model is trained on 300 million pieces of audio data and the cough model alone is trained with approximately 100 million cough sounds.
This cough model can find anomalies in a cough and it can detect whether the Cough sound is related to Tuberculosis or any other Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD).
An AI health startup in India named Swaasa is just doing that by integrating the HeAR model in their research to specifically identify TB patients from their cough sounds.
TB is a treatable disease but every year millions of people go undiagnosed. With models like HeAR, organizations like stopTB.org are hoping to eradicate TB and so do we.

Robots taking over restaurants.
You go to a restaurant and a Robot shows up to take your order and serve your food. Robotic companies like Sweetgreen are developing Robots to be used in restaurants.
But why Robots are required in restaurants in the first place? It could be for one of these reasons: Cost cutting, efficiency, no breaks, no sweat, no hairs, almost zero flaws, one-time investment, no scheduling problem and the list goes on.
With all these advantages focused towards business owners, the price the customer pays is : no smile, no human interaction, monotonous experience; probably some advantages customers may have: no tips (maybe?), food served with almost zero flaws.
Would you enjoy the Robotic experience in a restaurant every time? or do you prefer the food served by humans?
With Robots, of course, labour jobs are going to be affected greatly, but that is the world we are probably heading to.
A new AI search engine.
While OpenAI's searchGPT is still in beta, a new search engine is out. Meet Consensus, an AI search engine for Research. This new search engine can provide answers only based on the 200 million research papers. It is a search engine for searching through scientific research papers.
With ChatGPT, the answers can be hallucinated, whereas with Consensus, the results are backed by scientific papers. The consensus meter will provide results based on the scientific papers analysed.
If you are a student, who is doing scientific research, consensus will be of great help. Not only for students, but general people who need scientific advise based on well-researched papers, Consensus will be of immense help. Try the consensus app here.
Create Hyper-realistic photos.
A lot of image and video generators are on the rise. From Dall-E to Midjourney, all of the image generation models can generate good images but the images generated by Flux are highly realistic.
Check out the image above and comment on which is the realistic image and tell me why others are not.
If you get it right, I will send you a treat.
Quick Hits.
An AI Chatbot almost sold a Chevy Tahoe which cost over $76,000 for just $1. A Hacker named Chris Bakke tricked a Chevy dealership AI chatbot into agreeing to a “legally binding offer” and made the AI chatbot agree to sell him the Chevy Tahoe for just $1. Since the AI chatbot was not an official spokesperson for the dealership and so the AI chatbot's legal binding does not stand. Once this news broke, many tried the same and eventually the dealership had to bring down their chatbot.
Many humans are extremely scared and sad that AI will or might replace their jobs at some point. If you are curious to know which jobs will not be replaced by AI, here are some of them:
Nurse practitioners, Veterinarians, Physical therapists and Occupational Therapists
Mohsin Naqvi, the Chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that they are relying on AI to select players from their country's domestic pool of cricket players.
